Hello Everyone !

Things are going pretty good. M*ldon and his family are going back to their island in the outer islands. We are going to miss them. They came because they were going to have a baby. The baby is very healthy and guess what? We named and blessed the baby. Guess who was voice? That’s right, me. It was pretty fun. It was a little bit strange too. It was the first time I did that. Now, when I eventually have my own baby, it won’t be the first one that I have named and blessed. I was joking with the parents that I was going to name the baby Meyer Jr. It was pretty funny. They were laughing. The baby's name is Trayden Blake Hashigairig. Yep, you try saying that. It was really hard. Yapese names, no problem, outer island names… really hard.

Church was pretty good. We had only 15 people there. We were missing a couple of families because of the temple trip. They flew in really late and were really tired. So hopefully there should be more this week. I taught the youth. It was pretty fun. I really like teaching them. They are a good group. I little bit small, but really good.

As for calling me for Christmas, I will give you a number next week. As for the time, could you please give me a list of times that are best for you and then I will let you know what time is best for me. Like what we did last time. I think that works pretty good. I have no land line now. So I might go to the church and have you call that or maybe just the cell phone. We will see.

Dad’s Questions

Question 1:  Describe your best teaching moment this past week?

Answer: Talking about the priesthood and it was not being understood, then the Spirit just came and it all made sense to him.

Question 2: What service did the missionaries get to render this past week?

Answer: We helped clear a spot for a member to build a house.

Question 3: How many lessons, and with member’s present?   Answer: 20 and 8.

Question 4: Any details you can share about the temple trip that must have happened by now?  Like numbers, were they new members… anything at all would be wonderful.  I pray for them all the time regarding the temple.

Answer:  It was great. I am not sure what the number of people went this time. Some of them were new members like A*gistine, and others were older ones. It was really really good. I talked to some of the people, and they all just said that it was awesome, and they want to go back.

Question 5: What Christ-like attribute do you feel has been most developed over the past 1 ½ years while you’ve been serving this mission?

Answer: Patience and Love.

Question 6: Is Beatlenut still the biggest challenge for people joining, or are there other things too?

Answer: That one, and getting to church, are the hardest here.

Question 7: Are there any unique family traditions that you like from the people on Yap?

Answer: I am not sure. The families here just really like to sit and talk with each other.

Question 8: If you were to see me walking on a path in Yap Island next week what would you do?  Pick your answer from:

a.       Run up and hug me.

b.      Run the other direction because the mission rules encourage that not to happen.

c.       Send your companion ahead to talk with me, but stay a distance.

Answer:

a.    Run up and hug me.  I would definitely do this. 

Question 9: What put the very biggest smile on your face this past week and what are you looking forward to smiling about this coming week?

Answer: We were teaching with some young men and the used the word sometimes after everything, so then one of them to the other said "do you chew betelnut" and the other one said sometimes, oh, wait, no. It was so funny. I am looking forward to teaching R*lford and his family. They are going to be great.

Sounds like the Christmas party was a blast. We are going to have one on the 28^th. I am not sure what the plan for that is.

Question 10: Did you get a package this week?  What was in it?   Answer: I have not gotten the mail yet. So I am not sure.

Question 11: How are things going with the Sisters?

Answer: They are really doing well. They are having lots of member support to help them figure this place out.

Question 12: You said you were the district leader. What area makes up your district?

Answer: Well, all of Yap is our district. We are small, so the District and the Zone are the same thing.

Question 13: You moved!  Please send pictures/video of your apartment, inside and out. It would be awesome to see the view out your window!

Answer: It is awesome. I wake up to a beautiful sunrise every morning.

Question 14:  I never remember you mentioning Gagil. Where is that?  Are there any members in that area?  Where do you go too church?

Answer: It is the same church as Thool. There is only one on this side of the island. If you look on a map Gagil is on the left side under the two islands that are a little bit separated. I covered it the whole time I have lived in Thool, just not very much work happens there. There are a couple members that live there, I am not sure where there house is though.

Question 15: You haven't said much about the new CES couple. Talk a little about them. Do they have a blog?

Answer: Not sure if they have a blog. They are really nice. SIster Strother (wife) calls us here boys. She is super great. They are really good cooks and are a ton of fun. They are really musical too. It is really fun. They want to do a Christmas party for the missionaries. It should be really great.

Question 16: Who are you teaching right now?

Answer: R*lford, J*ven and J*ff. They are all doing pretty well. They didn’t go to church, so they are not doing the best, but they are really interested. T*resa is the mom of a member named J*sse. I have been trying to teach her for a while, and nothing, now she is really interested.

Question 17:  Any baptisms this week?   Answer: Unfortunately, no.

Question 18: What is your plan for p-day?

Answer: I think that we are going to play basketball. It should be really fun.

Staheli - Hear you went skiing. I am sure that was great. Dad said that he went down a black diamond, did you go down too, or were you smarter than that?

Reed - Have fun with basketball. The team is really going to need your help especially if there are only 4 people playing. You need to hold up the Meyer family tradition of winning!!

Grandma - Merry early Christmas. Hope you are doing great. I sure do love you. I think that we might act of the Nativity scene here like we do at your house. It should be fun.

Letter from Elder Meyer: Wow!!! Sister Missionaries coming to the island! Now there are 8 missionaries on Yap.

Hello Everyone.  Here's a video of a wonderful baptism in the ocean.

To Everyone

So, this transfer is crazy… I will go fast. We heard we might lose most, if not all, of the missionaries because of the chickenguna.

Well, then we were told we need to find some more apartments so that is what we are doing now. We have found 2 new places to live, and are getting things ready for more missionaries. We were told that we might get some sisters, which is really exciting, and go up to 8 missionaries. We have not had either of those for 3 to 4 year.  So things are pretty great right now. It will be really great. There should be 4 missionaries in the Thol branch and that would be really exciting. I can't wait for that to happen. This transfer should be good and quite interesting at the same time.

Cl*nton is doing really good he should be baptized on Saturday. It should be great, we are both very excited. The person, who gives him a ride to church, is going to the temple, so we need to find him a new ride to church. It will all be okay though. Blessings will come from people going to the temple. We have some new really great investigators, they should be baptized this week, if all goes according to plan, we are going to push and pray that it all happens.

Sorry it is short. I had a huge letter written out and when I pushed send it took me to toggle.com, so I lost it all. I am very sorry. The internet is crazy here sometimes.

That is about all the time I have left. Just know that I am doing fine, the work is going great, I love this gospel, and I LOVE YOU ALL. YOU ARE THE BEST.

Just lost everything again on the computer. And I have only a couple of minutes left, the only thing that saved was dad's stuff.

Things are going good here on Yap. We are all doing really great.

Sounds like Reed's day was a lot of fun. You are so lucky to be able to go to the temple so much. I truly miss it. And over 200 kiwi's, that is crazy. I didn't think we would ever get any of those.

Question 1: I noticed the Garrett’s finished their mission. What was the biggest blessing they brought to the island during their service?

Answer:   I think the temple. They were such a big part of getting the first group to go and getting this group ready to go next week.

Question 2:  If you were to pick one thing that you learned this past week, what would it be?

Answer: Expect the unexpected. More on this later…

Question 3: How many lessons, plus with members present?

Answer: We had 23 lessons and 12 with a member present.

Question 4: I can’t remember if mutual is working in the Thool branch? If so, what do they usually do?  Answer:  Nope.

Question 5: Any teaching or lessons being shared with an island chief?

Answer:   Not really. They have stopped progressing. We just stop in and see them every once in a while to keep them in contact with the missionaries.

Question 6: I’ve lost count, how many total baptisms on the island since July of 2012?

Answer: I think close to 30.

Question 7: Was there a moment this past week when the Holy Ghost confirmed something that was being taught?

Answer: We taught the restoration several times this past week, and every time the Spirit was there, I felt it and I know the investigators felt it.

Question 8: Could you share the details about today’s prep-day?

Answer: Today, we study in the morning just like normal, and after head to Colonia. We start laundry go and shop and email. Come back, finish laundry and go do something fun. Today, we are going to be busy doing something very interesting. More on that later though.

Question 9: For the youth Sunday school class, you seem to teach from time to time, do the students seem to have a favorite Book of Mormon story?

Answer: Nephi, I guess. That is the one that they are most familiar with. So I try to get them to know more stories from the Book of Mormon.

Question 10: What put the biggest smile on your face this week?

Answer: Hearing the testimonies on Sunday.

Question 11: How do you feel the zone is doing overall?

Answer: We are doing pretty good. I think that we can always do better though. We are all pretty unified which is good.

This was a good week. Unfortunately everything that I  just typed was erased, and now I need to do it all over. I will go quick and see what I can get done.

Dad

Quite a story about the Presiding Bishop. [Note from Dad: Bishop Stevenson attended our ward/congregation and shared with us that he had been on Yap Island just before Elder Meyer arrived there.]

Question 1:  From the story above about the Presiding Bishop talking about Elder Meyer… what comes to your mind about it?

Answer: Everything happens for a reason.

Question 2: What traits have you observed from President Mecham that you would like to incorporate into your life?

Answer: HE is bold and enthusiastic about the gospel.

Question 3: Do you use any forms of technology in teaching people on the island?

Answer: Just he DVDs you sent.

Question 4: How many lessons and with members present?   Answer: 19 and 7

Question 5: There was another Chikungunya fever outbreak on Yap. News says that 340 cases discovered.  That’s quite a bit for the population.  Are you and the others Elders staying healthy?

Answer: We are good.

Question 6: What may have strengthened your testimony the most this past week?

Answer: Hearing the testimonies of the people I’ve taught, they spoke at district conference.

Question 7: If you were to write one complete sentence that describes the children on Yap, what would that sentence be?

Answer: They are special group of kids, they are like all kids though, they just want to have fun. They are just awesome, the spirit they have is amazing.

Question 8: If you were to write one complete sentence that describes the adult church members on Yap, what would that sentence be?

Answer: A group of people who are doing all they can to follow Christ in a difficult spot in the world.

It sounds like you talk to everyone about me. When I come home you will have nothing to talk about. Ha ha.

Question 9:  Any packages?  What did they have in them?   Answer: Nope

Question 10: Any Thanksgiving plans?

Answer: We were going to have a baptism, but that is not going to work out, so not really.

Question 11: How many people were at church, what did you do?

Answer: Well, it was district conference and there were 137 people there. It was awesome. Elder Ringwood, the new Area President was there. It was really good.

Question 12: How many church services do you attend?

Answer: I guess you could say two. It is one normal one, and one that is called a small group meeting. It is just sacrament meeting. It is smaller than a branch and is dependent on the branch.

Question 13: Talk about the children on the island.

Answer: The kids are great. They are supper funny and really fun to talk to. They are like normal kids. They like to have fun and play around. There is just a special spirit with these kids though.

Question 14: Have you gotten sick while on Yap?

Answer: Not really. I have stayed pretty healthy.

Question 15: Describe a time this week when you followed the spirit and were blessed.

Answer: We got a referral, but could not find were the person lived. We looked up and down the village and we had no luck. I just felt impressed to go down one more time, we stopped at this house, and there she was. It was great. We had a wonderful lesson with her.

So you are a junior. That is what I thought. It has just been a long time since I thought about school. You need to stop injuring yourself. You are going to lose both your legs if you are not careful. Ha ha. Glad you are doing great man!

I just got a letter from you last week. It always puts a big smile on my face to read your letters. Thank you so so so much.

 

To Everyone

Alright, I will go fast because this is the 2^nd time I’m writing this letter since my first letter got deleted… This has been a crazy week.   We are being very careful about the chickenguna illness going around. Then got a call that Pres Mecham is thinking about putting more missionaries on this island. And that I need to go and find an apartment for them to stay in. So now I have done that. I am not sure what is going to happen. I think it will all be good. Whatever happens it is the will of God, so no reason to worry too much. I know that there is a lot of work to be done where the new missionaries would be moving to. So it will be good.  I know good things will happen there.

Elder Ringwood is here. He is a really great man. We had a ton of people and District Conference. It was really good to see so many people there. We had 137 people, it was great. As I have mentioned, some of my recent converts talked. Ag*stine, and his wife, and also J*hnny.

It was really great. They all did a fabulous job. It was so good to hear their testimonies. It made me feel really good. The spirit was super strong there. It was great. J*hnny talked about me in his talk. He was really scared to go up and talk. I helped him feel a little bit better the night before. He did great.

Ag*stine and C*rmen were both really nervous. They told the other missionaries that he wanted to talk

with me. So I drove down there and talked to them about what they were going to do, and how they can prepare for it. They both did wonderful.

It was a very good conference. It was mostly about hastening the work.

It all went right along with what President Monson is talking about.

It was really good.

This morning we had a meeting with President Ringwood and his wife and the Pres and Sis Mecham. It was a really good meeting. Most of it was about working with members more. Hastening the work. And of course there was always something about being obedient, well exact obedience.

Elder Ringwood is a very smart man. We talked for a long time just on 3 Nephi 11, and the order of things that happens, and the order that Jesus Christ did things. It was really interesting. I never thought about it. For example, there were about 2500 people there and they all touched Jesus. If you figure it took about 10 seconds per person to touch Him. Then that is about 7 hours that Jesus stood there letting every single person come and touch Him and get their own testimony. It was all really good. True conversion takes time on our part and on theirs. We can't be frustrated when some people are progressing faster than others.

Well, I am almost out of time, so I need to hurry.

Hello Everyone.

Dad

I am glad that you have enjoyed conference. I am glad work is going so well; that is really good. I still don't fully understand what you are doing. I know you keep telling me, but i have just got so much stuff going in my brain, it is hard to keep it all straight.

Question 1:  General Conference speakers talked about how important it is to stay committed to supporting moral standards in our community. Even if the world is trending another way.  Do you find it difficult, or rather easy for Yapese members of the Church to live God’s standards… or are they looked down upon or prejudiced against because of such standards?

Answer: Some of them are harder and some are easier. Keeping the Sabbath day holy is more of an accepted standard because the Catholic Church has been here for so long. The dress standard is frowned upon here, and so is the Standard of keeping our body healthy and strong; namely because of betelnut.

Question 2: Have you ever taught someone about Jesus Christ that didn't know anything about Him?  If so, what are your key messages?

Answer:  I haven't taught someone that knows nothing about Christ, just someone who knows little. What I focus on is what He has done for us. His Atonement for us, and why he did it… and what He requires of us to do to partake fully of the Atonement.

Question 3: How are things progressing with that “other outer island” language?

Answer:  Well, it is very very hard. I have been told that this language is easy, but I am having a hard time with it. My brain is structured in Yapese, it doesn’t accept this new language. In fact, my brain is kicking out English a little bit. I find myself talking to myself in Yapese often. I am trying though. This 2^nd new language is close to Chuuckese. . Chuuckese is the easiest language in the mission. I am going to keep trying, but I am having a hard time.

Question 4: If one of the Elders were to get hurt, say a broken bone… what exactly would happen and how would you go about getting care? Do you know if anything like that has happened before?

Answer: Well, he would go to the hospital here on Yap first. If they could not take care of it, he would fly to Guam on the next flight. He would stay there until it was all good, then come back. Elder Mafi, broke his ankle here. He left right before I got here. He went to Guam for a while and came back.

Question 5: We gain knowledge a bit at a time… is there something you've learned recently that you are grateful to have learned?

Answer: I have studied a little bit about adversity, and burdens that we are given. There is a lady in the branch having a hard time with this. We are going to talk to her tonight. What I have learned is that God gives us challenges in our life for a couple of reasons, one to "test" our faith. To see if we are truly committed to Him, or not. Second, to help us learn. The challenges we are given teach us something. We may not understand what we are learning until it is over, but we learn something from every problem. And as always to help us increase or faith in Him.

Question 6: Do you know of anyone on the island that may be considered very wealthy?

Answer: No one here would be considered wealthy by the standards in the states. By the standards here, yes people are wealthier than others. The guy who owns the church’s’ property is wealthy.

Question 7: Besides growing local food and fishing, what jobs do the members of the Church have?

Answer: One works on the Education board, several members teach school, some fix computers like Aug*stine, some work at the stores here.

Question 8: Dance is such a predominant part of the Yapese culture, have you learned anything about what the dances generally mean? Could you teach someone from the states how to do a Yapese dance?

Answer: I understand so little about the dances and what they mean. I have seen many of dances; I know what some of them mean. Each dance is very unique. They all tell stories about the culture here and the legends here. The problem is, the words in the dances are so old, that the most people on the island do not understand them. Very few people actually know what is going on in the dances.

Question 9: When you look back over this prior week, was there anything that happened that put a huge smile on your face?

Answer: M*ldon getting the priesthood. It was great.

Question 10:  How many lessons did you get to teach this past week, and how many with members present?

Answer: This was a tough week. We had 20 lessons and 6 with a member present.  Elder Garrett wants me to thank you for making me accountable to you for what I am teaching here.

Those are great quotes for the 1st presidency; I really love them, thank you. I told Elder Ramiterre about the scriptures, he is so excited.

Question 11:   Please tell me about the people that you are currently teaching.

Answer:  J*ven is a young boy that we just found. He is really interested, but he is not sure how his parents will react. He said that he really wants to learn more. We taught him the restoration, and he seemed to like it. He gave us the name of one of his friends to go and teach, so he liked most of what we shared. Another young boy his name is Br*ndon, we taught him in the past, he has never been interested before, now, his girlfriend is about to be baptized. He is more interested now. He wants to learn more.  There is a girl named Abb*. She is form the Philippines. She is interested in the gospel, but she is not sure how her parents will react. I have talked with the mom, she seemed okay with us teaching Abb*, but didn't want us to teach her.

Question 12: Tell me about your companion.  I know he is from the Philippines and doesn't cook much.  What else?

Answer: My companion is from Fiji. I have also had a companion from the Philippines though. He is a great guy. He is very excited about the gospel.  And he enjoys sharing it with others. He is a little shy. He says, he doesn't know English very well. He is really funny, and connects with the people here.

Question 13: When you go and teach a lesson - tell my how it typically goes.

Answer: That is a very broad question. It really depends on the person. Sometimes they are more accepting, sometimes not. It really depends on the person. If it goes well, the Spirit is there and it is great, if not, they just listen, and don't pay attention.

Question 14: What would you like for Christmas?

Answer: I have no idea. I have not thought about that at all, I will start thinking.

Question 15: Chips and Salsa are on the way.  Anything else you crave?

Answer: Jell-O or brownies or cheese-its.

Staheli - It was so great to hear from you. I love to hear how you are doing. I really am enjoying my time here on Yap. I have learned so much, and I love to share the restored Gospel with the people here. It brings me so much joy. Thanks for the email. I really do love hearing from you.

To Everyone

Well, time is about out, so I will go fast. I took a long time answering your questions today. They were really good questions. Let’s see what is new. President Mecham will be flying in on Saturday. To that should be good. It is raining really hard here right now. They road to my house is super muddy. It is so hard to get in and out. In fact right now, there is a bus stuck in the road and the wheels are completely covered in mud. It is crazy. I never know if I am going to make it out from my house to go and teach people. It makes things pretty crazy. We are still seeing a lot of people. We are working with so many less actives right now. It is good. We are seeing several of them getting excited about the gospel again. It makes me so happy to see people progress in the gospel. I love it.

Could you send me a copy of the “Book of Mormon Movie” and the “Other Side of Heaven”. I have got people asking for those.

Hello Everyone.

This was an amazing week. I absolutely loved this week. It was the best week ever. We had a baptism... Actually two of them!!!! One in my area, and one in Elder Hatch's. It was fantastic.

We had the district youth activity on Saturday. That is where we had the baptism. I baptized and confirmed J*hnny on Saturday/Sunday. It was so cool. We got to go in the ocean. It was really awesome. I really loved it.

Well, this was a great week, we had 14 “member involved” lessons… it was great. Things are really starting to turn around here. We normally get about 5 member involved lessons a week. So it was good.

We are teaching a lady named J*ne. She is really awesome. She should be baptized in September. I am so excited for her. She saw the baptism on Saturday, and she said that she wanted to be baptized really bad. So that is going well. I am very excited about her. She is the most promising person we have been teaching.

The youth activity was a lot of fun. We had somewhere around 80 people there. It was really great. I really loved it.

Sounds like you had a very busy day today. I am so glad that you guys do your home teaching. I wish people here did theirs. Oh man, I really miss boating. I really enjoyed doing that. So you are off to Switzerland. That is pretty cool. I do really think you are a spy. I love you dad.

Question 1:  When you are walking around a village, how do most people treat you when you meet them for the first time?

Answer: Well, honestly, it depends on the village. If it a strong Catholic village, the people will mostly hide in the jungle. If not, most of the people are fairly friendly. You will be able to teach them a little bit, they won’t commit to anything, but you can teach them. 

Question 2: What is it that the AP’s taught you about finding when they came to visit?

Answer: Umm. i don't know. They were just really good at it. They just kept reiterating talking to everyone, it was good. 

Question 3: Today the Young Men /Young Women sang a spectacular number in sacrament meeting. Do your branches there have choirs or special musical numbers?

Answer: Nope, most of the time when in Thool, I am pretty much singing a solo. 

Question 4: Wards here in the States are made up of people with diverse gifts and talents. What gifts and talents to members of the branch there have?

Answer: I couldn't say for sure. Everyone is good at building things. No one knows how to play the piano. Everyone knows how to cook good food. I don't think it is quite as diverse as the states. 

Question 5: How is your cooking coming along?

Answer: It is coming alright. I cook the same things every time. 

Question 6: When you think back over the past year, is there something you really appreciate about the Garretts?  [Garretts are the senior couple serving on the island handling seminary]

Answer: I really love the Garretts. They are wonderful people. I really appreciate how much they care about the people here. And that Elder Garrett is always willing to come out teaching with us, especially when we were in a group of three missionaries.

Question 7: Do you think it made any difference to be serving on Yap and having received your Eagle Scout?

Answer: Just general safety for sure, but besides that, I couldn't say. The stuff I learned is so engraved into me I am not sure what it would be like not having my eagle scout.

That is just what you need mom, is to be more busy. ha ha. Did you finish your masters? I pray every night that you will! Tell Melanie that I am so excited for her to go on a mission. It is amazing!!!! I am so glad that you love working with the young women. That is great. I wish people here had your drive. It would change everything.  Love you mommy.

Question 8: When you talk about people getting baptized, often you say they are moving to the states. Do they move to the same area here in the states?

Answer: A lot of people move to the states. Not just converts. Most of the members try to move to Utah. One member, from the Thool branch, is moving to Utah, Lehi on Tuesday, she is very excited. She is leaving two sons here, she has asked me to watch over them. I will. The two boys will go to the states right when I finish my mission. I really look forward to seeing them when I get to the states. 

Question 9:  Last week you answered your dad's question about mission stories and said that the one about you and Yap went around the mission.  Tell us what was said.

Answer: Well, one of the APs said that he heard that there was someone in the mission that picked the exact spot that he went from the Book Of Mormons. He couldn't remember where, but I told him it was me, and I told him the whole story. People really really like that story. 

Question 10:  You said that you do most of the cooking now.  What do you cook?

Answer: I cook spaghetti, spam and rice, sweet and sour pork, if there is cheese and tortillas, and I cook quesadias. I have made chicken and rice. I don't know, I just make stuff up sometimes. 

Question 11: What are you studying in your personal study of the scriptures?

Answer: I am studying the Book of Mormon. I have two different challenges that I am doing currently, so I just try and stay up with that. One is in English from President Mecham, for the mission, the other is in Yapese for our zone. 

Question 12: Do you go to mutual in the week nights?  What do the youth do at mutual?

Answer: We don't have mutual here. I will help run a youth activity in Thool occasionally, but there is not a whole lot for the youth here :(

Question 13:  If you could send a message to the youth that are sixteen and seventeen years old about a mission, what would it be?

Answer: To read the Book of Mormon and Preach My Gospel. That will help you prepare, if you are not sure you want to go, trust me, it is the right thing to do. There is nothing better that serving people through the Lord’s work.
